Travel Information
Dear Traveler,
Getting there is half the fun. Right? When you arrive in Costa Rica you can pick up a road map of Costa Rica at the airport or at any travel agent. Look for the Osa Peninsula in the southwest corner of the country. About halfway down the peninsula you will see Puerto Jimenéz on the Gulf side. We are 8 kilometers west of the gulf coast road just north of Puerto Jimenéz in the foothills of the mountains. Give yourself a full day to travel anywhere in Costa Rica and plan on relaxing and enjoying the drive. I know it looks like a small country but there are few road signs and the roads can be rough with occasional holdups due to landslides, disabled vehicles and accidents. It all works out just fine if you have the right attitude. I've had a great time talking with people and bird watching during those holdups. Generally it takes 6.5-7.5 hours to get to our place by car, 9-10 hours by bus and 45 minutes by air. If you are driving, we will send you detailed directions.
If you really want to have the flexibility of a car and don't want to do the drive all the way down, there is now a car rental agency in Puerto Jimenez. We can make the reservation for you if you would like. The cars are all 4x4 and range from $70-$120 per day with discounted weekly rates.
You can also get a pick up or delivery from the car rental agencies in San Jose but it will probably run between $75-$175
If you do not have a lot of time, most of the year you can fly down to the Osa the same day you arrive in San Jose and leave the same day also. Schedule your international flights with the incoming flight as early as possible and the return some time around mid day. During the high season there is a flight that leaves San Jose for Puerto Jimenez at 3:15. You will need to allow about 1 hour for customs and immigration and 1/2 hour to get to the local airport. We always have plenty of outgoing morning flights to return by with the first one at 7 AM.
There are two National Airlines which fly into Puerto Jimenéz. Sansa is $136 one way and flies out of a terminal next to the international airport. Natureair is $149 one way. They fly out of a terminal in Pavas, on the other side of San Jose. Both airlines have morning and afternoon flights December through April. Mid- April through November the flights are usually in the morning and around midday. Since the schedules often change with little notice, please check with us for the current schedule. You may make reservations with these airlines directly but it can be difficult. From experience, we have found that the easiest and most reliable way to make reservations is through us. Please be aware that if you are booking directly on line, that the rate they give you does NOT include fuel surcharges and taxes which is ~$25 more. They do not give you the final rate until you actually select "book the flight". If you run into problems let us know and we'll see what we can do. There is also a private charter service available between San Jose and Pto. Jimenéz or to other destinations on the Peninsula and in Costa Rica which is especially useful for groups since it will give you flexibility iwth luggage weight.
We can arrange to have a taxi waiting to pick you up at the airport or dock in Puerto Jimenéz. The taxis charge approximately $25-$30 one way. If you need a taxi and have not pre-arranged one, there are usually some at the airport and many in the town center ( it's a bit of a walk with luggage).
